Most long time Christian Scientists, especially those who have served their branch church in the capacity of First Reader, probably can repeat without hesitation the words of the scientific statement of being, from page 468 of Science and Health with Key to The Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and its correlative passage from I John chapter 3. Both are repeated by the First Reader at the conclusion of a Christian Science Sunday service just before a final closing benediction. There is beautiful correlation between the biblical text and Mrs. Eddy’s clarifications.
“There is no life, truth, intelligence, not substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.” (468: 9-15)
Let us examine the verses which Christian Scientists know as the correlative Scriptures, and blend them with the Scientific Statement of Being.
I John 3:1-3
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: (Let us note that the highest form of love, pure divine Love, continually emanates from divine Mind, or the Father, upon us. We and the entire spiritual universe are in turn the manifestation or effect of God’s knowing and loving of His own ideas – His image and likeness in the form of sons and daughters. In other words, Spirit is immortal truth, Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness) therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. (Mortal mind is the counterfeit misrepresentation of the one divine Mind. Mortal mind based error dominates worldly thought and does not recognize our spiritual nature. It falsely presumes our nature to be material. The world failed to comprehend Christ Jesus’ demonstrations of this truth – namely that matter is mortal error, and hence matter is the unreal.)
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, (Understood from God’s absolute view, from spiritual sense, Spirit is God, and generic man is His image and likeness, His sons and daughters, and this is true NOW) and it doth not yet appear what we shall be (but false mortal sense dominates in generic human consciousness, hence the perception of Spirit as reality in the world is temporarily obscured. But it will be revealed and therefore matter will be seen to be temporal.) but we know that when he shall appear (when we do perceive Christ through spiritual sense), we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is (we will finally be rid of erroneous perception and will be seeing clearly, spiritually. This view excludes life, truth, intelligence, and substance in matter.)
And every man that hath this hope in him (every human who realizes that mortality does not belong to our real and divine consciousness and that it can can be identified and removed from human consciousness – who recognizes that being is spiritual and not material) purifieth himself (is elevated to a higher consciousness by the removal of that mortal thinking from his consciousness) even as he is pure (thus bringing to fruition the fact of the inherent purity of our consciousness, which is not human, but divine. In other words, man is spiritual, not material)
