Supposition: The Conscious Admission of Invalid Existence

What is meant by supposition?

Supposition, as the term is used in Christian Science, is the conscious admission of invalid existence.  “What does that mean?” you might ask.  From the standpoint of pure human sense it sounds confusing, unclear, self-contradictory.  It certainly does sound initially unorthodox to those unfamiliar with Christian Science thought.  Deeply examined in the sense of finding “The Word”, the Bible tells us all about consciousness.  The Bible is the record of many millennia of man’s interpretations and understandings of consciousness.  Certain aspects of human consciousness are only as valid as belief lends them validity.  Human experience is human consciousness made manifest.  It is the improvement of the quality of human consciousness, which is within our own control, which lifts human experience to higher and happier levels.   Let’s use the first four verses of the 91st Psalm as a platform to understand that point.

Ps 91:1 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

In the universe of Spirit, there is only one dwelling place.  Many centuries after the Psalmist wrote these words, the Gospel of John explained  (John 1:3) that “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.”  God, Spirit, is All-in-all.  Wherever one resides must then be within that one all-inclusive infinite dwelling place.  Where is that place?  “Where” is a human concept.   The spiritual “dwelling place” of man is eternal, universal, and spiritual, while a spiritual “dwelling place”  is not a spatial, material, or temporal concept.  The dimensional and time-based concept of place is but a limited human adaptation of the universal All-in-all of divine consciousness.  Accordingly, the “secret place of the most high” is divine consciousness.  He who deliberately and consciously is aware of that which is true and substantial, in contradistinction to the erroneous, supposed, and insubstantial, is “abiding under the shadow of the Almighty”.

In other words, he is fully and supremely confidently aware that God’s all-inclusive principle IS his present protection.  The very infinite  nature of the eternal reign of truth, the power of that which IS and is therefore naturally harmonious, IS man’s protection from the supposed, the limited, the frightening, the evil, the unreal.  Man’s protection against the opposites of God lies in his exercise of being and living God’s I AM identity, and that simply because God’s opposite is not.

Once more stated:  He who is deliberately and consciously aware of that which is true and therefore is substantial, is fully and confidently aware that the infinitude of God’s realm IS all the protection against discord that ever could be needed – by virtue of the fact that there exists no boundary to the environment of infinite harmony through which discord could enter.

Ps 91:2 “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

Let us analyze from the first person perspective from which this is written:  I speak as the consciousness of God, as God’s expression, as God’s spokesman.  I know my “self” to spiritually reside in His infinitely harmonious realm, the realm of that which eternally IS, the realm of truth.  My refuge is therefore the conscious awareness that nothing opposite to God’s eternally harmonious truth can exist with any validity, or can at all be.  Inversely then, I know that temporal, discordant error consciously exists with invalidity.  That is another way of saying that error is consciously supposed.  Opposition to God cannot be known by either God or by spiritual man, but it can consciously appear to a human being, it is therefore only mentally supposed in the human mind.

Psalms 91:3 “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”

In the absolute (God) frame of reference, in divine consciousness, there are “no snares”, no traps, no “fowler” whose objective it is to capture and hinder the untouchable ideas of God.  The untouchable ideas of God go forth spiritually and universally reflecting the omnipotence of Love.   The human mind entertains the imagined presence of mortal consciousness, which is the complete inversion of immortal consciousness, and within that supposed inverted mortal consciousness resides every discordant error, every single opposite to Truth.  But there is nothing substantial about any part of its supposed contents, which are nothing but mental negation.  Every one of the supposed opposites therein is the lie about the truth it represents.  The truth is infinite presence, and the lie is therefore infinite absence.  That infinite presence continually reduces the “noisome pestilence” to nothingness.  The noisome pestilence is pure false mental supposition, much like a negative number claims the identity of its positive counterpart, but represents lack, rather than the presence which its positive counterpart represents.  As we would do in Algebra, to see the somethingness of that which comes to us in a negative form, we must mentally take the “absolute value” of its presentation.

Ps. 91: “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”

Safe within the consciousness of God’s very awareness of Himself, we rest with blessed assurance.  The  human consciousness represents the present divine consciousness, supplemented by the supposed addition of mortal consciousness.  Nothing can be added to perfection!  Eccl 3:14 tells us “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever:  nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it:” To reach harmony, human consciousness must be raised out of itself through the removal of suppositional influences.

In proportion as supposititious mortal thought is replaced by the conscious entertainment of the facts of immortal being, is human consciousness comforted and senses Love’s ever present protection.  Humans experience this mental transformation in a language and form best suited to the mind’s state of spiritual development.  Humanly, a proportional increase in entertainment of divine thought, relative to mortal thought, may appear as a form of physically manifested protection.  Trusting “under his wings” is a human image with which the human consciousness can identify.  As thought is increasingly spiritualized, the concept of “trusting under His wings” rises to a higher mental assurance of residence in the divine consciousness, absent of boundaries through which contamination might be supposed to enter.

The “shield and buckler” is the infinitude , the ALLNESS of truth.  Consider this word “truth”.  It is perhaps the most powerful aspect of the concept of God operating as principle.  That which is true, namely truth, defines existence itself.  If something is true, it IS.  That which consciously IS and is defined by truth never began to be and never can stop being, and includes absolutely no aspect of human awareness.

Man is as much God’s unchangeable idea as is the fact that 2+2=4

Every idea of God is as true as is the statement 2+2=4.  The universal fact that 2+2=4 never began to be true, and it can never stop being true.  It is an idea of God, governed by principle.  Man, as an idea of God, shares the same status of eternality as does 2+2=4.  Man, as the complete expression of God, never started and can never stop being the complete expression of God.   Therefore, from the divine perspective, man can no more become flawed, diseased, irritated, sinful, incomplete, etc., than can 2+2 stop being 4, and begin to be 3, or 5.  Truth being your shield and buckler is as permanent and untouchable and predictable as is the result of the summation of 2+2.
