On page 293 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy writes “There is no vapid fury of mortal mind – expressed in earthquake, wind, wave, lightning, fire, bestial ferocity – and this so-called mind is self destroyed.” The word “vapid” is defined by Webster’s 1828 Dictionary as “Having lost its life and spirit; spiritless; dead.
At first glance this sentence appears to address primarily what are termed natural disasters. But it contains a deeper spiritual message. Christian Science begins at the starting point of God’s infinite presence and teaches that nothing takes place, or can take place, outside of the boundless mental realm of God, who is the only and infinite Mind, who is all goodness, and who is the continuous expression of divine Love.
Then what is the separate and mortal mind possessed by the carnal man? Spiritual logic deduces it to be nothing, no thing. It is only a pretender. Deception is its foundation. It only pretends to exist. To justify itself, it claims to support, aid, and improve upon the already perfect individualized spiritual man whose consciousness is the perfect self awareness of the only Mind, God, good. How can anything at all, good or evil, be added to exclusive infinite perfection?
A mortal mind counterfeits the one divine Mind by first presumptuously assuming its own self-defined identity to be valid, and then mentally creating the false manifestation of itself, the counterfeit mortal man. The deceived and deceiving counterfeit mortal man is the false conception of man with which human sense most commonly associates identity, opposed to God’s real man, the perfect and complete spiritual image and likeness of God. Mortal mind then professes to inhabit this sham man, the product of its own self-believed claim to be, hiding its deception within the human consciousness. This erroneous lie claims to usurp the true individualized and infinite spiritual identity of man expressed as Soul. The lie would then create the illusion of conflict within its own imagined consciousness by mentally granting erroneous validity to other supposed mortal minds, supposing them to also be self-acting. Each of these erroneously imagined states of false mortal consciousness furthers deception by presuming to act of their own claimed volitions, thus furthering the universal belief in many conflicting mortal minds opposed in character to the nature of the ONE infinite and truly omnipotent Mind of God.
So tangled is this web of deception that mortal belief even falsely convinces the world that God has sanctioned conflicting individual mortal minds and given them free will, the right and ability to willfully choose wrong, while continuing to give lip service to God and goodness as omnipotent. The world is so deeply engrossed in this deception that it adopts the doctrine of free and conflicting human wills as generally accepted theology. So humanly honored has this deception become, that those who rebel against its assuredly assumed validity are regarded as blasphemers for standing by the correct insistence of a universally good, omnipresent, omnipotent, unchanging principled God with no possible opposition.
Mrs. Eddy continues on page 293 “The manifestations of evil, which counterfeit divine justice, are called in the Scriptures ‘the anger of the Lord.’ In reality, they show the self-destruction of error or matter and point to matter’s opposite, the strength and permanency of Spirit. Christian Science brings to light Truth and its supremacy, universal harmony, the entireness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil.”
Divine Mind knows only, and can know only, its own perfect and already complete, infinite, eternal ideas. But, what is the character of the world’s presentation of the political scene? Among the most mindlessly accepted mental conflicts in human society is the seemingly continual controversy over the politics of human government. Conflicting and hateful politics paint a picture of endless universal human discord. Everyone appears to disagree with everyone else. World view presents two or more conflicting ideologies of potential human social solutions, usually represented by political parties which, though certainly divinely motivated, are defined by human reasoning. These conflicting human ideologies each claim their own self-righteous validity, and they claim it on the basis of the general belief in the validity of the supposedly independent mortal minds entertaining them. The validity of these human beliefs entertained by these conflicting parties can only be humanly self-justified by the presentation of even more human evidence, and of more human reasoning.
“But what is really going on?” Christian Science asks. What is really taking place within the only valid consciousness, the ever peaceful and harmonious divine consciousness? Does there exist there a conflict of opposing and equally valid thoughts? Christian Science assures us of the impossibility of such “vapid fury”. Vapid fury does not and cannot take place in Mind. It claims to take place in what is termed mortal mind, which Christian Science explains away by virtue of the infinite boundless nature of the one divine Mind. Political conflict is not valid power.
Evidenced by the fact that political conflict takes on the appearance in human consciousness of coming to us objectively, as an object external to and removed from our own self control, the astute spiritually minded observer who stands guard properly at the door of his own human consciousness will recognize the tip-off which raises the red flag bearing the word “INVALID!” The astute scientific spiritual observer never leaves his post and never forgets that all of human experience is really subjective – that is, its quality and its content are the results of the presence and quality of thought entertained in the human consciousness. The wary observer the sees that conflict, on the basis of its objective appearance, is the invalid evidence which he must work to eject if he would elevate his human consciousness higher in the direction of the divine. Where does invalidity, error, actually reside? Error can only claim to reside in one place – in mortal mind, in that “solecism in language” which “involves an improper use of the word mind.” (114:12 ibid)
Just as Jesus stilled the storm, as recounted in Luke 4:36-39, only in a like manner can we also still every other kind of storm which would claim to take place in that earthly realm of consciousness, called for lack of a better word, mortal mind. Jesus stilled that storm not by directly addressing it as a valid entity, but by the recognition that its appearance was only the manifestation of fear supposed to be acting in the supposed mortal minds of the disciples. Just how did Jesus eliminate the storm? By recognizing the invalidity of the mental vehicle in which its invalid cause, fear, claimed to be operating. Jesus immediately removed the effects of whatever error claimed to be acting in mortal mind by the annihilation of fear’s operating platform, mortal mind. This removal stilled the storm.
Likewise, how can we still the apparently brewing political storm on the horizon of the upcoming American political process? How do we quiet the disturbing activities of mortally designed mental political provocations so blatantly displayed and wielded by the opposing political parties? Like Jesus, in order to quiet the political storm, we must firmly refuse to participate with mortal mind.
Psalms 1:1 (New KJV) tells us “Blessed is the man, Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful.”
Divisive political advertising tempts us to do just these things. To self righteously cling to one’s humanly held political position while scorning and humanly judging the political opposition, assuming that their human political approaches are illogical because they are in conflict with one’s own human experience or opinion, is to act contrary to the advice of this verse. It is to sit in the seat of the scornful. In the Rule for Motives and Acts, found in the Church Manual are members admonished to “daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously. “ When we condemn and humanly judge political philosophy, divisively painting a picture of the political opposition as ignorant and/or incompetent, are we not humanly judging, and thereby judging erroneously? Are we not humanly condemning and thereby condemning erroneously? Divine Mind does not and cannot judge the human thought of political parties, for God does not know human government, or human politics.
How can we heal the appearance of conflict in the upcoming election? On page 167 (ibid) Mrs. Eddy writes “Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized.” To rely on Truth to heal our election process requires that we cease all participation with human error and all of its subtle subsets so enticingly presented by mortal mind in the political advertising arena. Human judgments, stereotyping, mud-slinging, supporting slandering party-sponsored propaganda – all must give place to Truth if we truly desire to calm the political storm, rather than continue to rock the already swaying ship. On page 261: 4, Mrs. Eddy says “Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts.”
What are we cherishing in thought? Are we cherishing mortal mind’s claims that our political opposition is ignorant, greedy, hateful, racist, lacking, the potential cause of doom or oppression? Or are we cherishing the natural and true characteristics of love, abundance and harmony in our fellow man, the human political opposition? The mortal man, no man, entertains sin, while immortal man can entertain no sin.
Just as Jesus stilled the physical storm on the Galilean Sea by his refusal to acknowledge mortal mind, and by his removal of its very claim to be, so can we bring to light the already present universal brotherhood to fruition on the political scene. Let us refuse to participate with mortal mind and its stirring up of discord among the brotherhood of the children of God. Let us demonstrate our natural dominion over the hatred so pro-actively promoted and subtly encouraged by the advertising of divisive political parties.
