Denials Must Include Reversal and Replacement

On page 267 of Science and Health with Key to The Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, we read “When examined in the light of divine Science, mortals present more than is detected upon the surface, since inverted thoughts and erroneous beliefs must be counterfeits of Truth.  Thought is borrowed from a higher source than matter, and by reversal, errors serve as waymarks to the one Mind, in which all error disappears in celestial Truth.”

For many years, I thought that Christian Science was teaching me to simply deny the presentations of evil – to just affirm their nothingness.  This false assumption is a too common stopping point, which would result in unsuccessful healing.  We must go to the next step.  What is the next step?  It is the reversal to which our Leader refers in the above excerpt.  If we deny that which we have determined through prayerful analysis to be a lie about our being, without mentally replacing the lying presentation with its inverted opposite, the truth, then we are unwittingly cognizing error to be able to stand on its own.  A lie can never stand on its own, for a lie is always a lie about its corresponding Truth.   A lie falsely seen as self sustaining becomes a something in our conception of it rather than the native nothing that it really is.

Truth stands on its own, for it is known by Mind.  It does not need its opposite, the lie about it, in order to be.  Truth simply is.  A lie, on the other hand, needs its corresponding truth for its own definition, for it has no Mind to know it.  A failure to replace the lie with its spiritual inversion, truth, is akin to accepting the false assumption that the lie is self sustaining.  If we view a lie as self sustaining, we give it a substance it has never possessed.  Inclusion of the reversal and replacement concept aids us in perceiving that a lie is not self sustaining, and is hence, nothing at all.

Denial must be followed by and accompanied with affirmation of the reverse of the lie, namely the truth.  This is why the first two sentences of the Scientific Statement of Being go hand in hand.  The first sentence denies.  “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter.”  The second sentence affirms, confirms, and replaces.  “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-inall.”  (page 468).  To find healing, we must go beyond denial and go to the final step of confirming and declaring God’s Allness, Onlyness, and Oneness. Specifically, we must replace the false claim with its spiritual inversion to discover our true status, and manifest healing.
